The NY Times’ Ben Ratliff wrote about DJ Tudo’s most recent album in his Sunday Playlist column in July:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/04/arts/music/04playlist.html
The Brazilian musician and researcher Alfredo Bello, who goes by DJ Tudo, studies the trajectory of music from West Africa to the New World. On “Nos Quintais do Mundo” (“In the Courtyards of the World”), released on his own label, Mundo Melhor, he’s literalizing the connections. The album was recorded around the world, in studios on three continents, and on the street: in a single track there’s maracatu rhythm from carnival in Recife, Brazil, with horns, bass and guitar suggesting Afrobeat, then some singing by Ahmet Male in a Senegalese Pular dialect recorded on a trip to Africa. (You can hear the full album tracks, as well as some of his field recordings, at www.selomundomelhor.org/nosquintaisdomundo.
DJ Tudo is a crate-digger of the highest order, spinning rare grooves of Brazilian funk; he’s an ethno-musicologist who has amassed over 1,000 hours of incredible field recordings of traditional Brazilian music for his label Mundo Melhor, which he incorporates into his own productions, along with collaborators like Mad Professor and Adrian Sherwood. He’s also a big music fan, and we’ve spent this week in NY checking out the likes of Roy Haynes, Mahala Rai Banda and Tom Verlaine, talking about music, culture and getting to know one another. In 2010, his US debut he performed in Washington DC, and shows at the Chicago World Music festival with Sierra Leonean hip-hoppers Bajah + Dry Eye Crew and Pedro Moraes.
